About AGS
Indian Army undertakes a large number of military-civic action initiatives in the UTs of J&K and Ladakh under the Op SADBHAVANA programme. ‘Access to Education’ was identified as a Key Focus Area.
Over a period of more than 25 years, Headquarter Northern Command located at Udhampur since late 1990s has established 43 Army Goodwill Schools (AGS) in the UTs of J&K and Ladakh. Of these, 7 AGS are located in Ladakh region, 28 AGS in Kashmir region and 8 in Jammu region. Approximately 17,000 students including 43% girl students are currently obtaining access to high quality education especially in remote and border areas. In addition, approximately 1,000 staff are also employed in these AGS.
There is a growing clamour by the local population for opening more AGS and recently sanction of the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri has been accorded for opening an additional AGS at Kishtwar.
A comprehensive review of the Op SADBHAVANA initiative was recently undertaken to align with the local aspirations of the population, synchronise with various Government schemes for implementation as a Whole of Society approach. Herein, the Key Focus Areas identified were access to high quality, technology enabled and National Education Policy (NEP) aligned education especially for the Socio-Economic Disadvantaged Groups, Women and Persons with Disabilities.
In order to nurture our children to realise their own potential and become responsible global citizens, a large number of multi domain initiatives are underway at AGSs.
The Motto of the School is ‘Learn, Grow, Succeed’ with a mission to nurture our students in becoming Global Leaders and Champions of Change.
